USA: Cases of the Omicron mutation have been discovered in six other states

Six other US states confirmed cases of the Omicron variant of Covid-19 yesterday, Friday, but the Delta strain of the new coronavirus remains a greater threat as winter approaches and Americans gather for the holidays, experts say.

The states of New Jersey, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Pennsylvania and Utah reported the first cases of the Omicron variant yesterday. Missouri is waiting for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to confirm a case of a St. Louis resident who recently traveled within the United States.

Scientists are still investigating the impact of the highly contagious Omicron variant, which was first identified in South Africa. Early indications are that it may cause milder illnesses than previous ones, including Delta.

The Omicron outbreak has prompted political leaders to impose new restrictions on Covid-19. But the dominant figure in the US remains the Delta, said during a briefing for reporters at the White House, Rosell Valensky, director of the CDC.

The case in Utah was discovered by examining the Covid-19 positive sample gene sequence in the state laboratory, according to a post by the state health service on Twitter.

Nebraska has six confirmed cases, according to the state health service. Only one of the six was vaccinated and no one needed to be treated for Covid-19, the agency added.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan has announced the first three cases of the Omicron variant in his state, adding that none of the three are being treated. And in Pennsylvania, a man between the ages of 30 and 40 was diagnosed positive in Omicron, Philadelphia, city health officials said.

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy says Omicron’s first case in the state is a fully vaccinated woman who recently traveled to Georgia.

An outbreak of infections could put even more strain on American hotels, which are already facing a high number of cases as well as the fatigue of their staff, Dr. told MSNBC. Asis Ja, Dean of the School of Public Health at Brown University.
