USA: Criminal charges against Steve Bannon have been announced by the Ministry of Justice

Criminal charges have been filed against Steve Bannon, a longtime adviser to former US President Donald Trump, for failing to comply with a summons issued by a House of Representatives committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol, the ministry said today.

Bannon refused to comply with the summons aimed at seeking documents and his testimony, citing Trump’s insistence – which has already been rejected by a judge – that his communications are protected by the legal doctrine of presidential privilege.

Bannon, 67, is accused of contempt of Congress for refusing to testify and refusing to provide documents, the Justice Department said.

“From the first day of my term, I promised the Justice Department staff that together we will show the American people in word and deed that the Department respects the rule of law, follows the facts and the law, and seeks justice on an equal footing,” he said. law, “said Attorney General Merrick Garland in a statement. “Today’s allegations reflect the ministry’s firm commitment to these principles.”
