Federal police who raided former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago mansion in Palm Beach were looking to recover documents related to US nuclear weapons, according to sources the Washington Post cited without naming them.
According to the publication, it has not been made clear at this time whether the documents sought by the FBI have been found.
Yesterday, however, the US Department of Justice asked a judge to release the warrant for the FBI’s investigation into Mar-a-Lago, which Republican Trump called political vendetta and a “witch hunt.”
The FBI’s request means the public may soon learn more about what federal agents were looking for during their first-ever raid on a former president’s home.
For his part, Trump said Thursday that both he and his legal representatives were “cooperating fully” with the federal probe, shortly after Attorney General Merrick Garland publicly placed himself on the FBI probe.
The Attorney General of the United States of America confirmed that federal agents searched Donald Trump’s home in Florida in order to – according to sources – determine whether he had illegally removed files from the White House when he left.
Merrick Garland stressed that he personally approved the decision to search Donald Trump’s home and noted that the Justice Department asked a court to release the warrant because of “substantial public interest.”
A source with knowledge of the matter said the FBI recovered about 10 boxes of documents from Trump’s residence during the investigation.
Former President Trump requested the release of the recovered documents late last night.
“Not only will I not object to the release of documents related to the un-American, unwarranted and unnecessary raid and burglary of my home in Palm Beach, Florida, Mar-a-Lago, but I go one step further in ENCOURAGING the immediate release of these documents, even though drafted by radical leftist Democrats and potential future political opponents, who have a strong and vested interest in attacking me, as they have for the past 6 years,” he wrote on the Truth Social social media platform.
The US Department of Justice has faced heavy criticism and online threats this week in the wake of the investigation. Trump supporters and Republican Party officials have accused Democrats of using the federal bureaucracy to target the former president of the United States.
It is worth noting that yesterday the FBI announced that a gunman tried to break into its facilities in Cincinnati. Security men said police exchanged fire with a suspect wearing a bulletproof vest.
Garland condemned the attacks on FBI and Justice Department officials. “I will not remain silent when their integrity is unfairly attacked,” he said.
