USA donates R$ 520 thousand to help families affected by the rains in Petrópolis

The United States government, through the United States Agency for International Development (Usaid), announced this Saturday (19) the donation of R$ 520,000 to help families affected by heavy rains in Petrópolis, in the mountainous region of Rio de Janeiro. of January.

The resource will be used to distribute food and personal hygiene and cleaning kits to homeless families. The Adventist Development and Relief Agency (Adra) will handle the delivery of the products.

“USAID joins efforts to help recover from the damage caused to families in the Serrana Region of Rio de Janeiro, we are available to help them rebuild their lives,” said USAID Director in Brazil, Ted Gehr.

Douglas Koneff, chargé d’affaires of the US Embassy and Consulates in Brazil, said that “one of the defining characteristics of the partnership with Brazil is the desire to support each other in difficult times”.

“It is heartbreaking for all of us to see this tragedy take over the city of Petrópolis. We offer our condolences and solidarity to the families of the victims and the homeless.”

In January, Usaid provided US$100,000 to support people affected by the rains in the state of Bahia. About 800,000 people were impacted by the disaster, including the displacement of more than 73,000 people from their homes.

The amount was used for purchasing and non-food items. And, through the Adventist Development and Relief Agency, Usaid provided cleaning kits, including brooms, buckets, and cleaning supplies to families.
