Former New York police officer Thomas Webster, who attacked his colleagues on January 6, 2021 at the Capitol, was sentenced today to 10 years in prison, the heaviest sentence to date for the attack, Politico and CBS News reported.
Webster was found guilty in May of assaulting a Washington police officer during the Capitol Hill riots by supporters of then-President Donald Trump. The District of Columbia federal court rejected his claim that he was acting in self-defense when he hit the police officer with a pole and knocked him down.
“I too wish you hadn’t come to Washington. I too wish you had stayed home in New York (…) you hadn’t gone to the Capitol that day, because all of us would have been better off. Not only you… but your family (…) the country,” Judge Amit Mehta said in announcing the sentence.
