Daily infections with Covid-19 in the US are on the rise due to the Omicron variant and are expected to reach the record of last January, health authorities announced today.
“We are clearly on a steady upward trajectory,” epidemiologist Dr. Anthony Fauci, the White House’s pandemic adviser, told NPR.
On Sunday, 214,499 new cases were recorded, an increase of 83% compared to the average of the last 14 days. The absolute record, with 251,232 cases in one day was recorded in January 2021.
The number of deaths has also increased slightly in the last two weeks (+ 3%).
On December 24, the 197,000 case was exceeded and 1,345 deaths were recorded in the country that mourns the most victims in the world, with more than 800,000 dead since the beginning of the pandemic.
According to the newspaper, many states such as Delaware, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey and New York, as well as Puerto Rico, are recording an unprecedented increase in cases. In New York, health authorities also observed an increase in the number of children being treated with Covid-19.
The end of this wave “is very difficult to predict,” Dr. Fauci added. “We hope it will reach a peak and start coming down, as we have seen in other countries, such as South Africa,” he added.
In South Africa, after the first outbreak, infections are now declining. “Maybe this is due to saturation, that is, the variant hit all the vulnerable targets,” such as the unvaccinated people who are still too many in the United States, said Dr. Fauci. The Omicron variant, he recalled, appears to be less dangerous than the Delta for those who have had at least two doses of the vaccine.
“We hope that this reduced severity will prevent an increase in hospitalizations, but we are really concerned about the unvaccinated, who are vulnerable,” he said.
Dr. Fauci also opposed a new vaccination campaign for the 4th dose, saying that booster doses, too close together, would not allow the immune system to be strengthened against the coronavirus. “Right now, take the booster dose, do not deal with the fourth dose and you may never have to worry about it,” she said.
