In passing a law authorizing Republican Gov. Ron DeSandis to transfer irregular immigrants in other US states, Florida’s state Congress proceeded on Friday with a vote in a special session.
The text expands the scope of a law already passed in 2022 that allowed such transfers to other states, but only for people who lived in Florida.
Governor DeSandis ordered in September that 48 immigrants be airlifted from Texas to Martha’s Vineyard Island, a vacation spot for American high society, in the state of Massachusetts (northeast), with taxpayer money.
He thus participated in the initiative taken by the Republican governors of Texas and Arizona, who decided to move illegal immigrants to cities governed by Democrats, in the north and east USAin protest of Democratic President Joe Biden’s policy on immigration.
Florida Democratic Sen. Jason Pizzo sued Gov. DeSandis’ administration, accusing it of misusing public funds after the transfers last year, arguing they were breaking the law because the immigrants were in Texas, not the U.S. Florida.
The text approved on Friday (it just needs to be signed by Mr DeSandis) removes any restrictions on this: Allows illegal immigrants to be transported regardless of where they are in the US.
The vote comes as Florida has seen a surge in immigrant arrivals, particularly from Cuba and Haiti, to its shores in recent weeks.
Mr. DeSandis is building a national profile as speculation mounts that he may be the Republican nominee for the 2024 presidential election against Donald Trump.
