USA: Less than 40,000 cases in 24 hours – For the first time since October

For the first time in the last five months, on USA Less than 40,000 cases of SARS-CoV-2 were confirmed on Thursday, according to data collected by Johns Hopkins University.

After peaking with almost 300,000 infections in 24 hours on January 8, the number of infections on a daily basis began to gradually descend at the level it was in before Halloween, Thanksgiving and the end of the year, synonymous with a lot of travel across the country and the acceleration of the spread of the virus.

Another encouraging sign in the country that is suffering the heaviest pandemic in the world in absolute terms (over 520,000 dead due to COVID-19): the weekly averages of deaths and hospital admissions are declining.

The mass immunization campaign that began in the United States in December is accelerating with the (now three) approved vaccines: that of the Pfizer / BioNTech alliance, that of Moderna, and, a few days ago, that of Johnson & Johnson. The injections with the last preparation, given in a single dose, started on Tuesday.

The number of people who have been vaccinated is going to exceed that of those registered cases from the onset of the pandemic.

Citing the good news, US states are lifting one after another restrictive measures to curb the spread of the virus. The implementation of such measures is largely dependent on state authorities.

Their announcements alarmed the president Joe Biden, who considers them very premature. It is a “big mistake,” he said, urging Americans to continue wearing masks even if this protection measure ceases to be mandatory in their states. Similar warnings were issued by public health officials.
