Microsoft announced Monday that it will expand the coverage it offers to its employees in the US for abortion services and those related to gender reassignment, to include travel costs.
Several companies, including Yelp Inc, Citigroup, Levi Straus & Co and Amazon, have already pledged to cover the costs for their US employees who will be forced to travel to another region or state to have an abortion.
Other big companies, such as Walmart and Target, have not made any announcements since last week a draft Supreme Court ruling overturned their landmark 1973 ruling that legalized abortions in the country. .
The issue is even more urgent as 31 US states adopt new abortion restrictions this year, according to analysts at the Guttmacher Institute.
Microsoft “will continue to do what it can under the law to protect and support the rights of its employees” to access critical health care. It includes services such as abortion and gender reassignment therapies, according to a company spokesman.
“Support is being extended to cover travel expenses for these and other medical services, access to which is restricted due to an employee’s place of residence,” he added.
