USA: Museum in Maine offers $25,000 to anyone who finds pieces of meteorites that fell in the area

The small town of Calais in Maine of USA, located in a wooded area near the Canadian border and has a population of just over 3,000 has attracted the interest of “meteor hunters”. This is because there are suspicions that they fell in the area meteorites and museum is offering a $25,000 reward to anyone who takes them shards.

The fall, like a bright fireball, was visible even in daylight around noon Saturday (4/8), said Darryl Peet, chairman of the meteorite department at the Maine Mineral and Gem Museum in Bethel.

NASA said the meteor’s fall was spotted on radar — a first for Maine — and witnesses heard pops.

The museum wants to add the fragments to its collection of lunar and Martian rocks, Peet said, so the first “meteor hunters” to submit a one-kilogram specimen will claim the $25,000 prize.

According to Pitt, the fact that the radar detected the fiery fall confirms that pieces of the meteorites can be found on the ground. “The more people who know about it, the more people will search and the more likely it is to be found,” Pete said.

However, there is no guarantee that there are pieces of the meteorites large enough to satisfy the museum’s conditions and help the “meteor hunters” claim payment.

NASA said on its website that “meteorite masses estimated from radar records range from 1.59 grams to 322 grams, although larger masses may have fallen.”.
