The number of infants up to 4 years old treated with Covid-19 during the Omicron variant was five times higher than when the coronavirus Delta variant was prevalent in the United States, according to a study by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. (CDC).
From December 19, 2021 to February 19, 2022, when the Omicron variant was predominant, the weekly rate of Covid-19 infant-related illnesses peaked at 14.5 per 100,000 children under 4 years of age. That number was almost five times that of the Delta variant (June to December 2021), according to the study from 14 US states.
Also noteworthy was the disproportionately large number of infant hospitalizations by Hispanic and African-American families (27.5% and 23.1%, respectively, during the Omicron variant wave). According to experts who spoke to the New York Times, the phenomenon is largely explained by the conditions of poverty and large families in which many of these children grow up.
