USA: Pelosi’s speech on her departure is in a charged atmosphere

THE Nancy Pelosi announced that he is leaving the Democratic leadership in the House of USA in a particularly charged speech, especially just days after the US midterm elections.

Pelosi was cheered by Democratic lawmakers as she took her seat to announce her departure. Calling the chamber “sacred ground,” Pelosi recalled visiting the Capitol for the first time in her childhood, when her father was sworn in as a congressman.

She also referred to her working with three US presidents — Republican George W. Bush and Democrats Barack Obama and Joe Biden — “leaving out” Republican Donald Trump, with whom she has clashed several times. But he recalled that Trump supporters launched the January 6, 2021 attack on the Capitol.

“American democracy is magnificent, but it is fragile. Many of us have seen firsthand how fragile she is, tragically, in this room. Therefore, democracy must always be protected from the forces that want its harm”, he stressed.

After the US midterm elections, Democrats retained control of the Senate. However, control of the House of Representatives passed to the Republicans, albeit with a slim majority, which means obstacles to the work of the Biden administration in the next two years.
