USA: Problem with 400 Chinooks due to engine fire risk

Stuck on USA the military’s fleet of approximately 400 Chinook helicopters, as a risk of engine fire was identified.

The helicopters are manufactured by Boeing Co and can carry heavy loads, supporting disaster response operations as well as transporting the injured. Operationally and for carrying out military missions to transport personnel and military materials, helicopters are also used internationally, by various countries, including GreeceItaly, South Korea, but also Canada.

“The military has identified the root cause of a fuel leak that caused a fire in a small number of engines, among a number helicopters CH-47s that have been isolated, while corrective measures are being implemented to resolve the issue at hand,” said US Army spokeswoman Cynthia O. Smith.

There were no deaths or injuries from the incidents of engine fires, while the helicopters were grounded “to take essential preventive measures” until all measures to resolve the problem are implemented, Smith added, according to APE-MPE, which cites the Reuters.

The grounding, first reported by The Wall Street Journal newspaper, concerns specific models of helicopters of the type with engines manufactured by Honeywell International Inc, according to the report

Boeing declined to comment, referring questions to the US military. Honeywell did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
