USA: Prohibition will generate race for states where abortion is legal, says researcher

Journalist and researcher Paulo Sotero declared, this Friday (24), in an interview with CNN that the US Supreme Court decision to suspend the federal constitutional right to abortion will lead to a rush of pregnant women wanting to have the procedure performed to states where it is still allowed.

“The mobilization of voters, and, above all, of women voters, who feel threatened by a fundamental right that is to control their own bodies. Until now, they had autonomy as to whether or not they wanted to bring up a pregnancy. With the reversal of this jurisprudence of the Supreme Court, this decision ends now for the states”, explains

“At this moment, it is believed that in half of the states, the trigger of this decision now announced, makes it unconstitutional. Which will generate a very large rush of pregnant women from states where abortion is banned to states where it is still allowed,” she continued.

Of the 50 US states, at least 22 already have laws against abortion and another four states are expected to be in favor of the measure. They are: Montana, Nebraska, Indiana and Florida.

US States with Prohibition-Abortion Laws and Pro-Abortion Scenarios

What is at stake is the 14th amendment of the US Constitution, which guarantees individual freedoms against an oppressive state that can interfere in individual decisions.

President Joe Biden said he “will do anything to uphold women’s rights.” He pointed out that the suspension of the Roe Vs Wade law takes away a “fundamental constitutional right” of women and that the decision will have immediate and real reactions.

The Democrat expressed his astonishment at the fact that doctors will be criminalized for their duty of care and that women will be punished for protecting their health.

“It’s a perception of extreme ideology and a tragic mistake by the Supreme Court, in my opinion,” he added. “It is cruel that state laws end up criminalizing abortion, and with that, we will return to the logic of the 1800s. It will take women to more than 150 years of regression of rights”, she evaluated.
