Alaska Republican Rep. Don Young, who was first elected to the US Congress in 1973, died yesterday Friday at the age of 88, his political office announced.
According to the press release, the politician died while returning to his state.
“Don Yang’s legacy as a fighter for the state will remain alive, as will his deep kindness and honor. We will miss him greatly.”
The press release does not specify the cause of his death. In its online edition, the Anchorage Daily News reported that the politician lost consciousness while on a flight from Los Angeles to Seattle — and despite his best efforts, it was impossible for him to come back to life. The newspaper quoted Jack Ferguson, a former close associate of the politician.
Donald Young was Alaska’s sole representative in the House of Representatives. Until yesterday he was the member with the longest tenure in the US Congress with his current composition, according to his website.
