The United States called the announcement of the evacuation of areas of eastern Ukraine and the transfer of civilians to Russia a “cynical maneuver”, considering it part of the preparations for a military attack by Moscow.
“It is cynical and cruel to use people as pawns to divert people’s attention away from the fact that Russia is stepping up its forces in the face of an attack,” said a State Department spokesman on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference.
“Such statements are a new attempt to hide the fact, through lies and misinformation, that Russia is the attacking party in this conflict,” he added.
Pro-Russian separatists announced earlier that women, children and the elderly would initially leave the area. They accuse Kiev of planning an invasion after the new conflicts in the region, something that Ukraine categorically denies.
Russian television channels showed footage from the evacuation operation, such as children gathered in the yard of an orphanage.
Clashes have erupted in the last 48 hours along the border, with Ukrainians and separatists blaming each other for who is responsible. At around 18:00 today, a car exploded near the headquarters of the “government” of the self-proclaimed “Donetsk People’s Republic”.
