The US government today indicted Paraguayan Vice President Hugo Velazquez and former prosecutor Juan Carlos Duarte on corruption charges related to bribing an official and interfering with a public investigation. He therefore barred Velázquez and Duarte and their family members from entering the United States.
According to US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken, Duarte – a close friend of Velazquez – bribed a high-ranking Paraguayan official to block an investigation into the country’s vice president’s financial interests.
In addition, Duarte is charged with breach of confidentiality as a legal advisor to the construction project of the Yasireta hydroelectric plant on Paraguay’s border with Argentina.
With these sanctions, the US “affirms its commitment to fight corruption” everywhere in the world, the head of US diplomacy underlines.
Last July, the United States announced an entry ban on former Paraguayan President Horacio Cartes, accusing him of corruption and ties to “terrorist” groups.
