USA: Snowstorm cancels hundreds of flights – From the White House to Canada the snow exceeds 30 cm

A blizzard hit much of the northeast on Thursday night through Friday USA, paralyzing road and air transport, but also schools, many of which were already underperforming due to the pandemic.

From the White House in Washington to the border with Canada, the snow cover is over 30 inches[30 cm]in some areas, such as Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island. Early in the morning, Brooklyn Bridge and New York’s Times Square looked like postcards: covered in snow, in complete silence, a rarity in the metropolis of nine million people.

About 1,400 flights were canceled due to the blizzard, according to FlightAware. New York’s LaGuardia Airport canceled nearly a third of scheduled flights, while JFK Airport said 221 aircraft remained stranded on the ground. The situation is similar at Boston Airport.

The snowfall and torrential rains will continue until Saturday morning, according to the meteorological service.

To avoid road accidents, the State Department of Transportation has asked citizens to travel by car only in case of emergency. In neighboring New Jersey and Kentucky, governors had declared a state of emergency since Thursday night.

Most public schools are closed today, as are many banks, businesses, utilities and shops.
