USA: Teenager dead, two others injured by fire in front of a high school

A teenager was killed yesterday Monday and two others were injured and are in serious condition due to fires in front of an American high school, the police announced, clarifying that “suspects” were arrested.

The tragedy took place around 14:48 (local time; 22:48 Greek time) in front of the East High School in Des Moines, Iowa (central US), according to a police spokesman.

Three teenagers, wounded by bullets, were found on the spot by law enforcement forces and were taken to hospital. One of the victims succumbed to his injuries; the other two are receiving medical treatment, according to police.

“The fire appears to have come from a passing vehicle,” the statement added.

Police said they had arrested “suspects”, but had not yet charged.

The high school, which was initially closed, opened its doors and students were able to leave, the city’s public school administration said via Twitter.

The so-called mass shootings, the attacks with the use of firearms that have more than four victims in the terminology of the American authorities, are a perpetually repeated plague in the USA: they are committed in schools, in supermarkets, in the workplace …

In early February, a student was killed and a classmate was injured in front of a school in Minnesota. On November 30, a 15-year-old high school student opened fire indiscriminately on his classmates, killing four and injuring six others.

In 2018, a high school massacre took place in Parkland, Florida, where a former student opened fire with an AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, killing 17 people and injuring about fifteen others on Valentine’s Day, causing shock in the country and sparking mass mobilizations with central tighter control of firearms sales.

But in Congress, where the arms lobby continues to wield influence, any progress on the issue is considered unlikely, despite policy calls by President Joe Biden, including to tighten marketing rules.
