A 15-year-old teenager died and three others were injured, including a police officer, after a shooting near an unauthorized concert in Washington, D.C. (USA), on Sunday night (19), local police said.
The shooting was preceded by two previous incidents that caused panic and pedestrians being killed at the event, which drew several hundred people to listen to music played from a truck on the sidewalk, DC Police Chief Robert Contee told a news conference.
Officials managed to contain the area, ending the show after a “secondary incident”, said Contee, who did not provide details of the incident but said “people started to disperse at that point”.
Several people suffered leg and ankle injuries as the crowd dispersed, and police, firefighters and first responders were at the scene, the police chief said. Emergency personnel recovered an illegal firearm from an individual while tending to the wounded, he said.
The shooting began in streets near the concert venue, where the teenager was killed and others were wounded. Several firearms were seized at the scene, including a revolver with one of the two adults who was shot and transported to a local hospital, Contee said.
The officer and the two civilians were hospitalized and are in stable condition, he said.
Legal measures
Mayor Muriel Bowser highlighted the importance of security and obtaining permits for events in the city.
“We have a child who was killed today at an event that didn’t have any proper planning for the number of people who were there and with weapons involved,” Bowser told a news conference. “The chief of police and I will continue to secure the resources we need, but we need some accountability here.”
Authorities “will look into what legal action should be taken as a result of an event not allowed in our city,” Contee said.
“Unfortunately, things like this can happen when you have the wrong mix of people. who introduce firearms into a situation,” he said. “When you have large gatherings in a dense area, it only takes one person with a gun and the situation becomes deadly. In this case, unfortunately, a 15-year-old lost his life.”
The Department of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is assisting local police in the investigation, according to the agency’s Washington Field Division.
