The House of Representatives today voted in favor of a bill to recognize same-sex marriage in all US states, amid fears of a repeat of the US Supreme Court’s abortion reversal.
The bill received the affirmative vote of 267 lawmakers – all Democrats and 47 Republicans – while 157 Republicans opposed.
The chances of it also passing the Senate seem limited, however, since 10 Republicans will have to vote in addition to the Democrats. Currently, only Senator Susan Collins has expressed her intention to do so.
A large majority of Americans support same-sex marriage (71%), yet the ultraconservative right remains largely opposed.
