USA: The right to abortion

According to Politico, the US Supreme Court wants to overturn the right to abortion. However, women will not give up so easily, believes Christina Bergman.

USA: The right to abortion

That’s enough. Conservatives in the US have managed to go back in time in recent years. They passed anti-abortion laws, increasingly restricting women’s right to abortion, something that has been the case since the landmark decision of 1973, also known as “Roe vs. Wade”. And our anger has grown because of the incredible hypocrisy of those who, on the one hand, are supposed to defend individual freedoms, but on the other hand, want to control even our most personal decisions.

So now the “big blow”, the goal for which the Republican Party did not stand up, but followed a demagogue like Donald Trump. With the U.S. Supreme Court ruling on abortion law, once the decision on strict abortion law in the state of Mississippi is deemed legal, the other states will be able to decide whether abortion is illegal and impose a penalty. And according to the Center for the Right to Reproduction, a human rights organization that supports women’s self-determination, such a move would mean a halt to the right to abortion. Possibly immediately after the verdict of the Supreme Court.

Majority in favor of Roe vs. Wade

However, the Conservatives will have to wait with their celebrations. This is because if the legal situation in the country now returns to the situation it was in before 1973, then the difference will be quite large. We women will not tolerate such a thing. And we have allies. Most Americans support abortion rights and oppose overturning the ruling by the Supreme Court – a stance that has become entrenched in recent years.

All those who fought and benefited from the right to self-determination in the 1970s will join forces with those to whom the right to self-determination is now being taken away. And solidarity will be great – with words, deeds and donations. There are already ways and means for aborting women living in states with extremely strict laws. Sometimes this is tedious and costly, as the prohibition laws of “Christian” fundamentalists actually affect mainly women with little money and education. But, again, it is not impossible. Abortion will continue to be legal in many US states. In addition, today there is something else, social networks. The outcry on Twitter can not go unnoticed. Not even the protests in front of the Supreme Court in Washington as soon as the draft decision was published. Millions of women – and men – in many US cities, from New York and Washington to Denver and San Francisco, are protesting that their worst nightmare may be coming true.

Motivation for the election campaign

Another important factor is the elections for the Congress next November. The entire House of Representatives and one-third of the Senate are re-elected. So far, the prospects for the Democrats have not been very good. They have only a slim majority in the Senate and their small lead in the House of Representatives is already projected to shrink. If abortion rights are now abolished by the US Supreme Court, this will give the election campaign a whole new twist. Because, as the Bible writes, which conservatives enjoy so much to quote: whoever sows winds reaps storms.
