The Senate of USA adopted an emergency measure on Saturday that would have allowed the federal government to continue to be funded temporarily, just three hours before the start of the shutdown, the suspension of operations of various public services that would put thousands of workers technically out of work and cut off food aid to part of the beneficiaries, among others.
In a last-minute U-turn, the House of Representatives previously approved the text proposed by a Republican executive to avoid gridlock.
The measure was approved by 88 senators -9 voted against-, preventing in extremis the so-called shutdown for 45 days.
Biden satisfaction and message for help in Ukraine
The American president Joe Bidenexpressed satisfaction with the agreement that was approved, but demanded that Congress quickly approve aid to Ukraine, which was not included in the text.
“I expect that the speaker of the House of Representatives will keep his promise to the people of Ukraine and guarantee the adoption of the necessary support (…) to Ukraine at this critical time”Mr. Biden said, according to a press release released by his office, referring to Republican Kevin McCarthy.
