THE White House urged yesterday late night (20/3) him Chinese president Xi Jinping to use his visit to Moscow this week to tell Russian president Vladimir Putin to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and put an end to it war of Russia against Ukraine.
John Kirby, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, told reporters that the United States was concerned that Xi, who is visiting Moscow, would repeat calls for a ceasefire with Russian forces remaining inside sovereign Ukrainian territory..
Kirby said Xi should talk to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky about the impact of the war in Ukraine.
“We encourage President Xi to press President Putin directly on the need to respect Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. The world and China’s neighbors will certainly be watching closely,” he said.
Xi and Putin appear to be linked by “a marriage of convenience” rather than a marriage of affection, Kirby said. “These are two countries that have long been troubled by US leadership around the world,” he said.
