Three people were killed and 11 others were injured Saturday (local time) in a shooting on a busy street in Philadelphiaas announced by the police.
“Fourteen people, as far as we know, were shot and taken to hospitals”Inspector D. F. Pace told reporters.
“Three of these people, two men and a woman, were found dead when they arrived at hospitals, having suffered multiple gunshot wounds.”he added.
Pace told local media that officers were deployed to the scene “Observed many active gunmen open fire on the crowd” in the bustling South Street area of Philadelphia.
“You can imagine there were hundreds of people moving around, like every weekend, on South Street when these shots were fired.”he added.
According to him, the police opened fire on one of the gunmen who was shooting but it is not known if he was hit.
Local media reported that no arrests had been made.
According to Pace, two handguns were found at the scene and police have to wait until the morning to examine the images from the surveillance cameras of the surrounding businesses that closed on Saturday night.
The investigation is ongoing while the situation remains fluid with “many unanswered questions”, he added.
More than 20 shootings have been reported in the United States since the May 24 massacre at a school in Ovalde, Texas, in which 19 young children and two teachers were killed, according to the Gunviolence Association archive.
