On Friday, the three police officers and the two nurses on USAduring the trial for the death of Eliza McClain, a young African-American man who died in 2019 after being violently arrested.
In August 2019 23-year-old McClain was arrested in Aurora, with officers putting him in a headlock and then heavily sedated. He died three days later of a heart attack.
Initially his death had not attracted the attention of the American media, but after the death of George Floyd during his violent arrest by white police officers in May 2020, this case – like others – came to light again.
In 2021, the three police officers and two nurses were charged with manslaughter, after the publication of the conclusions of a special investigation launched into the incident. The investigation was requested by the governor of Colorado after the scandal caused by the death of the young man and after more than three million people signed a petition.
The five pleaded not guilty in court in Coloradoas the Denver Post wrote.
On the day of the incident, police received a call from a citizen who reported a “suspicious” African-American man wearing a ski mask and “acting strangely” on an Aurora street. An officer said McClain, who was unarmed, tried to wrestle his handgun away.
According to the victim’s family, the young man had just gone to buy a drink and was wearing a ski maskwhich he used to do.
