USA: Tornado hits Arkansas – Reports of casualties and widespread damage

Tornado hit Little Rock yesterday Friday (3/31), a large city in the state Arkansasin the South of United States of Americacausing widespread destruction, the authorities informed, while there is talk of victims and dozens of injured.

“Heavy damage has been done in central Arkansas,” Sarah Huckabee Sanders, the state’s Republican governor, who declared a state of emergency, said on Twitter. He added that he is “praying for those who were and remain in the path” of this tornado.

Little Rock Mayor Frank Scott announced via Twitter that he had asked the governor to deploy the National Guard to help respond to the disaster.

So far, the authorities have not given any official account of the casualties. Media talk about victims. More specifically, at least one person was reported dead and 24 or more were injured. Some of them are not in critical condition, according to the Associated Press.

The UAMS university hospital told AFP that it was on alert as it expects many injured people to be treated there.

First aid services are having “difficulty reaching” the locations where there are likely victims “because of the falling trees,” a spokeswoman for the health structure told the agency by phone.

Video from surveillance cameras and local television crews showed the massive tornado rising across the city of 200,000.

About 70,000 people are without power in Arkansas because of the extreme weather, according to the specialist website PowerOutage.

The US National Weather Service (NWS) had earlier issued an emergency warning.

Tornadoes, a spectacular and devastating phenomenon that is particularly difficult to predict, often strike the US territory, especially the central and southern parts of the country.

A week ago, a tornado hit the state of Mississippi, killing 25 people and causing massive property damage. US President Joe Biden visited the state yesterday.

In December 2021, some 80 people died when tornadoes swept through the state of Kentucky.
