USA: Tornado kills one and leaves thousands without power in New Orleans

A large tornado hit New Orleans, Louisiana. on Tuesday night (22), with significant damage in the eastern region of the city.

St. Bernard County President Guy McInnis told CNN that a person died in the Arabi neighborhood.

McInnis had no details on the fatality and said authorities had received several reports from residents being taken to hospital, but there were no specific figures on injuries. Some houses have been “taken down from their foundations and are on the street,” he said.

Emergency teams in cooperation with units of the State Fire Department are carrying out search and rescue efforts, the CNN WDSU.

On social media, residents of the region shared images of the tornado’s impact. “Arabi is out of power – I just ran over a power line. The wind destroyed Aycock Street. If I had left five minutes earlier, I would have been right in the middle of it,” Crash Harlowe wrote on Facebook.

The National Weather Service reported that the tornado passed through a portion of St. Bernard and Orleans counties. WDSU said the tornado passed through the Lower Ninth Ward and many homes were without power.

According to the PowerOutage.us portal, more than 10,000 customers are without power in the area.

The weather service also reported two reports of tornadoes in St. Tammany.

There are no reports of injuries or major damage following a possible tornado in Jefferson, according to the local government. “Our Jefferson Department does not report any major structural damage or injuries from the tornado at this time,” he said on social media.

Louisiana Governor John Bel Edwards said on Twitter that state agencies are assisting local bodies with damage assessments. “My prayers are with you in southeastern Louisiana tonight. Please stay safe,” he said.
