US President-elect Donald Trump announced on Friday the creation of the National Energy Board (NEB). The goal of the new body is to “oversee the path to US energy sovereignty,” headed by Doug Bergum, the governor of North Dakota. He had already announced yesterday Thursday that Mr. Bergum will take over as Minister of the Interior. This office in the US is very different compared to other countries: it is mainly concerned with the management of federal lands, especially national parks. The double hat that Mr. Bergum is already troubling environmental groups: They fear the governor, known for his close ties to big names in the oil and gas industry, will open the way for hydrocarbon exploration and exploitation in areas under his jurisdiction — such as the national forests.
