Nine police officers were injured and two people, a woman and the alleged perpetrator of the attack, were killed in a shooting incident that took place yesterday Friday in Phoenix, Arizona, authorities announced.
Five police officers were taken to hospital after being shot. One of them was in serious condition, but he is said to have escaped the danger, Phoenix Police Chief Jerry Williams said in a press conference broadcast by local television networks.
Police were called to the area following reports of gunfire at a home near 51st Avenue and Lower Buckeye Street. A police officer was shot by the alleged perpetrator as he approached the house, according to Williams.
“There was a baby in the house, who at one point was put in a stroller and left outside. As police went to safely remove the baby, the perpetrator started firing again, injuring four other officers,” Williams said. that the police then returned fire.
A woman was found injured inside the house and ended up a few hours later.
The gunman had been huddled inside the house for several hours. When the police raided the house around 7 in the morning (local time) they found the man dead, as broadcast by the television network ABC 15.
The man is said to have been the ex-partner of the unfortunate woman, with whom he had a child, most likely the baby involved in the incident. It has not been determined whether the perpetrator ended his life, while his motive remains unclear, according to police sources.
Williams called the episode “absurd” during the press conference. “It did not have to happen, but it does happen again and again,” said the Phoenix police chief.
