Voters in the conservative Midwestern state of Kansas on Tuesday voted in favor of constitutional protection for abortion, in the first major trial on the issue since the Supreme Court overturned a ruling that guaranteed the right at the federal level.
The state’s voters rejected a proposal to revise the state constitution that would have replaced the existing text in the fundamental law and would have paved the way for either tighter restrictions on abortion or a ban on the procedure.
62% of voters rejected the proposal, while 38% supported it, with 78% of the intended votes counted.
US President Joe Biden welcomed that voters in Kansas on Tuesday rejected a proposal to revise the state constitution that would have paved the way for the abolition of the right to abortion or the imposition of much stricter restrictions on medical procedures of this nature.
Mr. Biden said the victory for abortion rights defenders in Kansas, a deeply conservative state, showed that “the majority of Americans agree that women should have access” to such procedures, according to a press release released by the his services.
“Congress should listen to the will of the American people and restore the provisions” struck down by the Supreme Court in June, reversing its decision in Roe v. Wade (1973) that enshrined the right, the Democratic president added.
Yesterday’s process was the first statewide referendum since the Supreme Court decision, where conservatives hold a majority.
It has been closely watched as it is seen as an early indicator of whether and to what extent the abortion issue will mobilize voters ahead of November’s midterm elections.
