Trump administration is planning to seek a consent decree for Columbia University, legally linking the school to the changes it agrees to make while negotiating federal financing, the Wall Street Journal (WSJ) said, citing sources familiar with the strategy.
Under this agreement, a federal judge would guarantee that Columbia practices were in accordance with the federal government, according to the WSJ report. If the university does not comply, the judge could consider it in contempt, which could result in fines and other penalties, according to the report.
“The university remains in active dialogue with the federal government to restore its critical research financing,” a spokesman from Columbia told CNN when asked about the report.
THE CNN contacted the White House to comment.
This is the latest threat in the Trump Administration pressure campaign against Columbia.
Last month, Trump revoked $ 400 million in federal funding for the institution due to campus protests.
In response, the university has announced a number of new policies, including restrictions on demonstrations, new disciplinary procedures and an immediate review of its Middle East curriculum.
A week later, the interim president of Columbia, Dr. Katrina Armstrong, resigned. Armstrong had held the position since the former president of the university, Minouche Shafik, facing criticism for his management of campuses in the campus that protested the war between Israel and Hamas, he resigned.
