The US State Department said it was concerned about the direct involvement of North Korea in the Russian War in Ukraine, noting that the sending of troops should end.
“We are still concerned about direct (North Korea) involvement in the war. Submission of troops (from North Korea) to Russia and any support provided by the Russian Federation to (North Korea) in return should end,” commented a state department spokesman in an email.
The authority added that other countries, like North Korea, “have responsibility” for war.
North Korea confirms sending troops to Ukraine
Earlier, on Monday (28), North Korea confirmed for the first time that troops sent Russia in the war with Ukraine under the orders of leader Kim Jong-un.
“The victorious end of the battle to free the Russian region of Kursk demonstrated the highest strategic level of firm friendship” between North Korea and Russia, according to state news agency KCNA.
Russia said last week that the Ukrainian forces were expelled from the last Russian city they occupied, although Kiev denied the allegation and stated that their troops were still operating in Belgorod, another Russian region on the Ukraine border.
The Northern Workers’ Central Military Commission stated that leader Kim Jong-un made the decision to send troops under the comprehensive strategic partnership treaty he signed with Putin last year.
“Under the order of the head of state, the subunits of the Armed Forces of the Republic considered the territory of Russia as that of their country and proved the firm alliance between the two countries,” the commission said, according to the KCNA.
“Those who fought for justice are all heroes and representatives of the homeland honor,” Kim said, according to the agency.
North Korea “considers an honor to have an alliance with such a powerful state as the Russian Federation,” the state media added.
The Asian country sent an estimated total of 14,000 soldiers, including 3,000 reinforcements to replace their losses, Ukrainian authorities said.
With no armored vehicles and drone war experience, they suffered heavy casualties but quickly adapted.
Russia confirmed on Saturday (26) for the first time that North Korean soldiers fought alongside Russians in Kursk.
