USA: Washington creates an ambassador position for the Arctic

The United States today announced the creation of an ambassador for the Arctic, a sign of the importance it attaches to this sought-after strategic region in the face of competition from Russia and China and amid the climate crisis.

“An Arctic region that is at once peaceful, stable, prosperous, and cooperative is of strategic importance to the U.S.” primarily to “combat climate change,” State Department Deputy Spokesman Vedant Patel said in announcing the creation of the post. which will be submitted to the Senate for approval.

A career diplomat, Jim DeHart is currently the US Arctic Coordinator.

This announcement is issued as the meeting of the international conference of the Arctic Circle dedicated to Greenland is expected to begin tomorrow, Saturday.

Earlier this year, seven of the eight member countries of the Arctic Council, including the US, suspended their participation during a period when Russia held a rotating presidency amid the war in Ukraine.

The retreat of the Arctic sea ice offers significant economic or military opportunities thanks mainly to new sea routes.

Russia recently published a new naval doctrine in which it says it wants to strengthen its positions in the Arctic, both economically and militarily.
