Gen. Frank Mackenzie, the Pentagon’s chief of operations in the Middle East, has said he believes the United States will provide Egypt with F-15 fighter jets.
“I think we have good news that we will provide them with F-15s, which was a long, difficult task,” he told a congressional hearing. General Mackenzie, head of the U.S. Central Command, gave no details on the timetable or how many Boeing-built F-15s would be delivered.
Last month, Mackenzie stressed “very strong” military aid to Egypt as he flew to Cairo following a decision by President Joe Biden’s government to cut $ 130 million in military aid to the country amid human rights concerns.
Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, a former army chief, has been widely criticized for cracking down on dissent since taking office after ousting President-elect Mohamed Morsi in 2013 from the now-banned Islamist Muslim Brotherhood.
US officials have said the US relationship with Egypt is complicated. The most populous Arab country is a vital ally and key country in the Arab world. U.S. military officials have long stressed Egypt’s role in speeding up the passage of U.S. warships through the Suez Canal and in granting (clearance) overflights for U.S. military aircraft.
