Iran’s attack on Israel marks a significant escalation in tensions in the Middle East, according to an assessment by Professor Vitelio Brustolin, a Harvard researcher and specialist in International Relations.
In an interview with CNN 360° Brustolin highlighted the seriousness of the Iranian offensive and its possible consequences.
According to the expert, the recent attack differs substantially from the one that occurred in April.
“This time Iran did not warn, the attack began with ballistic missiles, which take 12 minutes to leave Iranian territory and target Israeli territory,” explained Brustolin, highlighting the speed and surprise of the action.
Motivations for the attack
The professor pointed out that the Iranian offensive was not just revenge, but a response to recent events.
“It was a response to the death of Ismail Haniyeh, leader of Hamas in Iranian territory and also a response to the attack that Israel carries out against Hezbollah, which is an arm of Iran,” he stated.
Brustolin also highlighted the close relationship between Iran and Hezbollah, mentioning that Iran annually transfers around US$700 million to the organization, in addition to supplying weapons.
Expectation of retaliation
The expert predicts a joint response from Israel and the United States to the Iranian attack. “Israel will fight back and not only Israel, the United States will also fight back,” said Brustolin.
He mentioned the presence of American military forces in the region, including the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln, equipped with F-35 fighters capable of striking Iranian nuclear facilities.
“At this moment, Israel and the United States are certainly planning a response to Iran and this response will most likely affect the Iranian nuclear program,” concluded the professor, indicating the possibility of significant military action against strategic targets in Iran.
