Wyoming’s governor signed a bill Friday to ban the abortion pill, which now takes effect in that state. The same time, federal judge in Texas considers banning mifepristone pills statewidefollowing an appeal by anti-abortionists earlier this month.
Legal disputes over the right to abortion have intensified in the US after the Supreme Court’s decision in USA which last year overturned the historic 1973 ruling that protected it at the federal level. Since then 12 of the 50 US states have outlawed abortion altogether, while several others have adopted very strict restrictions.
Clinics offering abortion services report that if mifepristone is banned, they will resort to misoprostol preparations for the medical termination of pregnancy. However, the exclusive use of misoprostol preparations is not considered equally effective.
