Use of checks drops 13.8% in the first half, reveals Febraban

The advancement of digital payment methods, such as internet and mobile banking, and the creation of Pix contributed to the decline in the use of checks in the country.

In the first half of 2022, the number of cleared documents in Brazil reached 103.9 million, a decrease of 13.8% compared to the same period in 2021, when it totaled 120.6 million cleared documents, according to the Brazilian Federation of Banks (Febraban).

The statistics, explains the entity, are based on Compe — Check Clearing Service.

Last year, the number of checks cleared in Brazil dropped to 218.9 million, a reduction of 93.4% compared to 1995, the beginning of the historical series, when 3.3 billion checks were cleared.

In comparison with 2020, the drop was 23.7% — that year, 287.1 million documents were cleared across the country.

“Bank customers have increasingly stopped using checks, and have opted for other means of payment, especially digital channels, which today are responsible for 70% of banking operations in the country, highlights in a note Walter Faria, Deputy Director of Febraban Services.

According to the executive, the growing digitization of bank customers was also boosted by the entry into operation of Pix, in November 2020.

“In this first semester alone, 9.74 billion transactions were carried out, totaling R$ 4.66 trillion”, he highlights.

Febraban notes that despite the reduction in the number of checks cleared in this first semester, the total financial volume of documents remained stable, going from R$333.5 billion in the first six months of 2021 to R$333.3 billion in the same period of this year. year.

“The numbers show that the average value of the check is higher, which means that the population is using this means of payment for higher value transactions, while smaller and day-to-day transactions are made with Pix”, assesses Faria. .
