or use of cheques in Brazil fell 23.7% in 2021 compared to 2020, according to data from the National Federation of Banks (Febraban) released this Friday (14). In all, 218.9 million checks were cleared, the lowest value in the historical series and a drop of 93.4% in relation to 1995, the first year of measurement.
In 2020, 287.1 million checks were cleared. The figure for the two previous years is far from the figure for 1995, when 3.3 billion checks were cleared, totaling R$ 2 trillion.
The amount offset in 2021 was BRL 667 billion, down 67.4% compared to 1995 and 0.22% compared to 2020.
The number of checks returned last year represented 8.5% of the total checks cleared, 18.6 million. It was a drop of 23.7% compared to 2020. In 1996, when this category was measured, 63.5 million checks were returned.
Total bounced checks in 2021 dropped from 15.2 million in 2020 to 13.6 million, a reduction of 20.6%. This category began to be measured in 1997, when 56.8 million bounced checks were recorded.
According to Febraban, the sharp drop in the use of checks in Brazil reflects the advance of payment options digital technologies, such as the internet, mobile banking and the creation of Pix, which took place in 2020.
According to Walter Faria, deputy director of services at Febraban, digital media currently account for 67% of all transactions carried out in the country.
For him, the process of digitizing bank customers was intensified by the emergence of Pix. The instant payment method already has 7 billion transactions, with R$ 4 trillion in financial volume.
