Recent episodes of serious reactions to styling ointments for braiding hair led the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to determine the recall of brands and temporarily prohibit the sale of these products. Effects such as temporary loss of vision, severe burning in the eyes, intense tearing, itching, redness, eye swelling and headache have been reported by users.
According to the agency, products previously purchased and existing in homes or beauty salons should not be used at this time. The causes of the reported reactions are still being investigated.
In view of the case, the Ministry of Health reinforced that consumers should be aware of the recommendations for use on the labels of the ointments and that they verify that the product has Anvisa approval to be marketed. Find out how to consult a personal care product, perfume or cosmetic below.
Consultation on the regularization of personal hygiene products, perfumes or cosmetics can be carried out in several ways. The simplest and fastest way is to consult the links on the Anvisa portal directly, as per the procedure below.
The query will depend on the type of regularization: registered products or products exempt from registration.
For registered products, the query can be made here. The query can be carried out using data that are mandatory on the product labeling, such as: product name, product regularization process number or CNPJ number of the company that owns the product. Data on record number and record expiry period can also be used in the query.
The appointment can be made for suntan lotions, sunscreens, insect repellents, hair straighteners, hair curlers and antiseptic hand gels that are mandatory registration.
As for products exempt from registration, the query can be made in this link.
risks of formaldehyde
In addition to ointments, the ministry highlights the importance of being careful with the use of other chemical products. In Brazil, the use of formaldehyde, for example, is not allowed as a hair straightener. The product can cause damage to the cornea, severe burns to the scalp, hair breakage and hair loss.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), formaldehyde is considered a human carcinogen. Traders or barbers and hairdressers who add formaldehyde to hair straightening products commit a sanitary infraction, in addition to being a heinous crime.
According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), the higher the concentration and frequency of improper application of formaldehyde, the greater the risk, both for professionals who apply the product and for users.
Major health effects involve irritation to the eyes, gastrointestinal system, or respiratory tract. The Inca also warns of chronic effects such as asthma, spasms, coughing, wheezing and pulmonary edema.
