A server update has been released for the YouTube mobile app that expands the available resolution settings for videos. Now the user will be able to prioritize “High image quality” or “Low image quality”, in addition to the already familiar options “Auto” or with a specific resolution.
During playback, the video quality will vary depending on the network or data connection conditions. As 9to5google.com pointed out after a little testing, “High Image Quality appears to be capped at 720p. Low Image Quality offers a maximum resolution of 480p, but can drop to the lowest possible on YouTube, 144p.
You can also select different priorities for cellular and Wi-Fi. Alternatively, you can use the “advanced” settings tab to select a specific resolution, from 144p to 4K UHD.
Not all users liked this change. On social media, there was a lot of dissatisfied feedback from users who found the new video quality settings too difficult to use.
