USP University City runs out of electricity and student denounces rape threat

Part of the University City of USP (University of São Paulo), in the Butantã neighborhood, in São Paulo, was without power during the morning of last Sunday (8) and the morning of Monday (9). A student and resident of the USP Residential Complex (Crusp) reported on social media a threat of rape during this period without light.

According to the Capital Campus City Hall (PUSP-C), a short circuit in the medium voltage network at 11 am on Sunday (8) affected one of the four circuits that serve the University City. This failure affected the power supply at the units close to Avenida Professor Mello Moraes, parallel to USP’s Olympic Line.

This stretch runs from the Center for Sports Practices (Cepe) at USP, through the School of Physical Education and Sport (Eefe), Crusp, the Central Restaurant (Bandejão), the Psychology Institute (IP) and the School of Communications and Arts (ECA), the Faculty of Economics and Administration (FEA) to the Polytechnic School (Poli).

The Municipality told the CNN, on Tuesday (10), that “there was great difficulty in locating the short circuit”, but power began to be re-established in the stretch between ECA, FEA, IP and part of Poli around 7:30 am on Monday. “Around 10:30 am, the supply was restored to Crusp, Cepe and Eefe”, said the City Hall.

“It still remains to restore power in some points. The PUSP-C team continues in the field, performing maneuvers and investigating the cause of the problem”, concluded PUSP-C.

threat of rape

Early on Sunday night (8), an astronomy student and resident of Crusp reported a rape threat on social media.

She wrote that, due to the lack of energy, the Bandejão, which is the main means of feeding the residents of the Residential Complex, did not open.

“Because of that I was forced to go to the IAG [Instituto de Astronomia e Geociências], because I needed to work, try to eat something and charge my cell phone. I left the Institute at exactly 6:15 pm, when it was already dark, sky closed,” he wrote.

She said that she noticed the general lack of energy in Cidade Universitária and decided to return home. The student said that while trying to light the way she felt someone approaching.

She claimed that a man appeared and began to verbally harass her, saying, among other insults, to “take advantage of the dark, which no one would see”.

The student said she ran towards Praça do Relógio, which is in front of Crusp, and managed to escape, despite the panic.

“I couldn’t see any features of the man, it was too dark. […] I can only remember your voice.”

The student also denounced that there was no university guard or military police along the entire stretch she traveled without light.

“We are aware of the episode”

wanted by CNN, USP manifested itself saying that “the Dean of Inclusion and Belonging and the Superintendence of University Prevention and Protection are in contact with the student to investigate the case”.

USP claims that there was no record at the University Guard and is in contact with the student “to investigate alleged attempted rape”.

“We are aware of the episode and strongly repudiate this type of occurrence on campus. With the new Dean of Inclusion and Belonging, our goal is to implement improvements in actions that guarantee the physical and psychological integrity of students”, said Dean Ana Lúcia Duarte Lanna, in a note.

“We are committed to adopting the necessary measures to ensure that this does not happen again, improving our communication and protection systems”, said the mayor of the campus, Raquel Rolnik, also in a note.
