The first womb transplant performed in the UK has renewed hope for potential recipients wanting children – including transgender women.
However, according to experts, there is still a long way to go before trans women can receive a uterine transplant.
“My opinion is that if there are transgender transplants, there are still many years to go. There are many steps ahead. My suspicion is at least ten to 20 years”, said gynecological surgeon Richard Smith, who participated in the procedure performed on the British woman, in an interview published by the newspaper “The Telegraph”.
UK procedure
The cisgender patient (ie, a woman who identifies with the sex she was assigned at birth) is 34 years old and underwent the transplant at Churchill Hospital, Oxford, in February. The organ was donated by her 40-year-old sister.
“So, she’s doing really, really well. She has started to have menstrual periods and that means her prospects of having a baby are very high. She needs to continue on immunosuppressive therapy and be closely monitored and we are hoping to do an embryo transfer in the fall [primavera no hemisfério Sul]”, informed Smith to the “Reuters” agency.
In addition to the gynecological surgeon, the team responsible for the procedure has about 20 people.
Another specialist who participated in the transplant, surgeon Isabel Quiroga, also gave details of the case: “She [a paciente] she was absolutely on cloud nine and there were a lot of tears, a lot of emotion, she was so happy.”
Although it is the UK’s first uterus transplant, this type of procedure first took place in Saudi Arabia in April 2000 on a 26-year-old woman.
