V. Kikilias: Despite the international circumstances and problems, tourism in Crete is at an excellent level

The opinion that despite the international circumstances and problems, tourism in Crete is at an exceptional level, was expressed today from Chania by the Minister of Tourism, Vassilis Kikilias, who was in the city as part of his three-day tour of the island.

Speaking to the journalists, he expressed his optimism for the course of tourism in Crete and in the rest of the country, at the same time making it known that the ministry is working on a plan to attract pensioners from northern European countries during the winter months, in areas of the country and in Crete .

“Our goal is to make Crete a sustainable tourist destination for 12 months”, he emphasized, pointing out that the specific project will give a new dynamic to the country.

The Minister of Tourism, responding to a journalist’s question about the possibility of reducing the taxes of Chania Airport and other airports managed by Fraport, during the winter season, in order to give incentives to airlines for the execution of routes, stated that for all airlines in during the winter and for destinations from abroad, the managing company of these airports in the country announced discounts of 35%.

The specific issue has been raised by executive reports from the airline company Ryanair, which “flies” to 11 of Fraport’s 14 airports, with Mr. Kikilia clarifying that “there is healthy competition, we see competition as equal, which means that all companies will have this discount”.

At the same time, he expressed the opinion that, through an international tender and with a time horizon of March, the installation of approach radar at Chania airport will proceed. Mr. Kikilias also referred to the dynamics of Chania as a tourist destination, as well as the need for the cooperation of the State, local government and tourism agencies, in order to deal with problems related to the tourism product of the place and to strengthen the productive fabric of the country involved with tourism.

Mr. Kikilias participated in a closed meeting of tourism operators, which was attended by the general secretary of the EOT, Dimitris Fragakis, the ND MPs, Manousos Voloudakis and Vassilis Digalakis, the representative of the MP Doras Bakoyannis, the deputy governor of Chania Nikos Kalogeris, the mayor Panagiotis Simandirakis and the president of the Chamber Antonis Rokakis.
