Vaccinating children will protect the community, says president of SBIm

In an interview with CNN, the president of the Brazilian Society of Immunizations (SBIm), Juarez Cunha, stated that the vaccination of children against Covid-19 will not only protect their families, but also society as a whole.

This Friday (12), Pfizer made official the request to the National Health Surveillance Agency (Anvisa) to immunize the age group from five to 11 years against the disease.

“In the same way that we observed in relation to teenagers – when there was the release [da vacina] for use in adolescents – for us it is great to have the possibility of protecting not only individual children, but this will also help to protect the community”, said Cunha.

Normally, Anvisa takes 2 to 3 weeks to decide on the possibility of a new immunizer. The official deadline is 30 days.

In addition, the Ministry of Health is rushing to obtain, this year, the special doses of the Pfizer vaccine to immunize the age group from five to 11 years against the coronavirus. The current contract guarantees another 100 million doses for people aged 12 and over, specifically.

“Vaccines are preventing serious illnesses and deaths,” warned Cunha.

“The vast majority of people who are suffering from the most severe form of the disease are unvaccinated.”
