Vaccination campaign in Lombardy “catastrophic”

The failure of the vaccination campaign is catastrophic due to the deficient system of appointments in Lombardy, the region most affected by the pandemic in Italy, as local politicians admit.

Lombardy was the epicenter of the epidemic 13 months ago and remains the region with the highest number of cases, as reminded by AMPE.

This is a “disaster from the beginning”, said the mayor of Crema Stefania Bonaldi in La Repubblica.

In Cremona the vaccination center was almost empty during the weekend because the people who were to be vaccinated did not receive the message for their appointment.

Local civil servants were forced to consult the municipal registers and call each of the citizens. A mayor used a minibus to transport the elderly.

“Yesterday I transferred 20, today 30 and about fifteen teachers” said Giuseppe Pope, mayor of San Basano in La Repubblica.

Lombardy Local Health Minister Leticia Moratti promised yesterday that she would take “quick and drastic” decisions to rectify an “unacceptable” situation.

Italy, like the rest of Europe, suffers from a lack of vaccines, but the catastrophic failure of Lombardy, one of the richest and most efficient regions to manage, is glaring.

In Italy, counting 105,000 deaths from Covid-19, 7.8 million doses of vaccine have been given and less than 2.5 million people have been fully vaccinated, in a population of 60 million.

In the context of a decentralized health system leaving much room for action in the regions, coordination of priorities has been deficient, despite the recommendation to precede those over 80 years.

According to the independent GIMBE organization, the proportion of people over the age of 80 who have received at least one dose of the vaccine ranges from 87% in Lazio, a region of Rome, to 2.6% in Sardinia.

The Prime Minister Mario Draghi promised to use “all means” against the pandemic and a dramatic increase in vaccinations.

The Italian government has set a target of tripling the number of vaccinations to 500,000 per day by mid-April and completing the vaccination of 80% of the population by mid-September.
