Vaccine changed the profile of hospitalized patients with Covid and reduced risk of comorbidity, says study

An analysis carried out by a laboratory at the Faculty of Medicine of São José do Rio Preto (Famerp) indicated that vaccination against Covid-19 changed the profile of patients who were hospitalized and later died as a result of the disease.

More than 2,700 patients participated in the study, who were hospitalized between January 5 and September 12, 2021. The researchers noticed that, in the unvaccinated group, the presence of one or more comorbidities was decisive for the worsening of the patient until death.

Among those vaccinated, deaths were concentrated among patients over 60 years old and with kidney problems. In this way, the study indicated that the vaccine made the comorbidity no longer a risk factor for the death of hospitalized patients with Covid-19.

In an interview with CNN This Friday (11), the professor at Famerp and one of the authors of the study, Mauricio Lacerda Nogueira, said that the work shows “the great capacity of vaccination to protect people with severe Covid-19 comorbidity”.

“We realized last year, following the pandemic, that, as the year passed, the profile of critically ill patients changed. At the beginning of 2021, we had a vaccination in the elderly and very serious cases in young people with comorbidities”, recalled Nogueira.

In a second moment, with the advance of vaccination, mortality returns to the elderly, in a much smaller proportion, but reaching the elderly with comorbidities, especially with kidney disease”, he added.

He explains that the research was carried out at the Hospital de Base de São José do Rio Preto, which is a reference in the region, and constant monitoring was carried out throughout the year with “who was entering the hospital, with what disease, what diagnosis, how it was made, which variant circulated”.

“Over the past year, young people who were not vaccinated and had comorbidities suffered very drastically,” he said.
