Vaccines: green light for the third dose for the over 60s

All over 60s and frail subjects of all ages who have already received the two administrations they will soon receive the third dose of the Pfizer vaccine. This is established by a new circular from the Ministry of Health which, last Thursday, received the green light from AIFA for the extension of the provision. In the next few days the clearance should also arrive for Moderna but, until then, Italy is moving with the first vaccine. The third dose for those over 60 is considered a “booster”, that is, an enhancement of the vaccination cycle already completed, and must be done at least 6 months after the second.

These are the same indications adopted for the over 80s and healthcare personnel, who have already started the new administrations together with immunosuppressed people.

To meet the demand, it is likely that some of the hubs that have closed in recent weeks will need to be reopened to carry out the operation. which should start no earlier than November or even December. Most Italians received the second dose in May and June, so for many people the six months will have passed only at the end of the year if not later, that is, in the first part of 2022. In terms of doses, stocks are not lacking: in there are about 14 million in stock in the refrigerators of the Regions. On 25 September Italy launched the third dose for the frail, the elderly and health workers.

According to the EMA, the various countries must indicate the age groups and vaccination priorities, even if for now it has only expressed itself on the third dose with Pfizer and not with Moderna, which in Italy was administered to 1 million and 100 thousand in their sixties and seventies. The question is expected to be resolved next week.
