At the annual press conference, Skoda summed up the results of 2020 and spoke about plans for the near future. So, it became known that now the company is responsible for the activities of the Volkswagen-Audi Group in Russia. Skoda is also the main concern for the management of the concern in the markets of India and North Africa (Egypt, Tunisia, Morocco, Algeria).
According to the company’s report, sales of Skoda cars in Russia increased by 6.8%. In 2020, the company managed to sell 94,632 copies, which is 6,023 copies more than in 2019. Such high figures were the reason that the Volkswagen-Audi Group gave the Czechs privileges to control the activities of the concern.
It is worth noting that the representatives of Skoda are able to make the best use of the potential of the countries to which they have obligations. So, in 2018, the Czechs created a unique project India 2.0 for India, aimed at developing the model range and increasing the local market share. The result of the new strategy is the Kushaq vehicle, which is based on the MQB-A0-IN platform.
Most likely, Skoda will also create a unique program for the Russian market. There are speculations that a redesigned Karoq named Volkswagen Taos will be the pioneer of the new system. The company representatives noted that the priority is to expand the model range towards entry-level vehicles. That is, the Czechs are planning to create a budget version for popular vehicles.
With regard to Skoda’s overall strategy, CEO Thomas Schäfer said the company will focus on developing electric vehicles and components for them. At the moment, the automaker is already producing hybrid batteries for the entire Volkswagen Group. However, this is not enough: modern realities require strengthening green energy and national charging infrastructure. The company plans to invest over 2.5 billion euros in advanced technologies. The CEO also named the main tasks that Skoda faces: cheaper cars, reducing emissions by 30% and entering new emerging markets.
