On the eve of its 95th anniversary, Vai-Vai rescued and made available on digital platforms the commemorative album “65 anos de Samba”, released in 1995. The project involved the cultural department of the biggest champion of São Paulo’s carnival, the Centro Cultural São Paulo (CCSP) and the record label Radar Records.
The LP features recordings of historic sambas from the Bixiga group, located in the central region of the capital of São Paulo, sung by names such as Thobias do Vai-Vai, Osvaldinho da Cuíca, Elizeth Rosa and Geraldo Filme.
There are works that accompanied the last Vai-Vai parades as a string, in 1971 and 1972, in addition to “Na Arca de Noel quem entrar não fosse mais” (In the Ark of Santa Claus, those who entered did not leave anymore), “Acredite Se Quiser” (Believe If You Want), “Orun Aiyê – O Eterno Amanhecer” (The Way We Like It), “Around the World in 80 Minutes”, “Amado Jorge, a História de uma Raça Brasileira” (Beloved Jorge, the Story of a Brazilian Race) and “Nem tudo que reluz é Ouro” (Not Everything That Glitters is Gold) – samba-enredo songs from all the years that the association conquered as a samba school until 1995.
The album is completed by famous sambas-exaltation by Vai-Vai, such as “Tradição”, “Me Perdoem As Co-Irmãs” and “Tributo À Velha Guarda”.
The Bixiga school is currently the most successful carnival team in São Paulo, with 15 wins and 10 runner-ups. Since 1995, Vai-Vai has won again in 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2008, 2011 and 2015.
In the 2024 Carnival, back in the Special Group, the school paid tribute to the hip-hop culture in São Paulo, scoring 269.4 points and taking 8th place, its best position since 3rd place in 2017. Vai-Vai’s theme for 2025 is by playwright Zé Celso Martinez, who also made his name in the Bixiga neighborhood. The school will be the seventh school to parade on Carnival Saturday and will close the parades of the Special Group of São Paulo.
